Character Name: Yuui Flourite
Character Canon: Shiritsu Horitsuba Gakuen / (Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles - I'm mentioning this because since Horitsuba in a crossover AU of both Tsubasa and Holic I'll be using some things from there to help build his Brave New World personality.)
History: Yuui is born in a western country, most likely a European one, together with his twin Fai. He had a happy and normal childhood, playing pranks with his brother and enjoying making people confuse the two. He's played the piano ever since he was a child and when he was younger he also practised archery before realising that his true passion was in cooking. At some point in time he travels to Italy to study the culinary art and opens up a restaurant there while Fai goes to Japan and becomes Horitsuba Gakuen's chemistry teacher.
A few years later Yuui is offered a position at the same school, as a home economics teacher, which he decides to accept. Instead of telling his brother this he travels to Japan in secret and agrees to become the price in a treasure hunt the headmistress has organised for Fai and another teacher under the description of "Fai-sensei's most precious thing".
At the moment he's living at the Horitsuba Gakuen campus together with his brother, right next door to Kurogane-sensei who they have over to dinner a lot since he and Fai are "such good friends".
A wiki page of his Tsubasa history can be found here! (Note that in this link Yuui is the twin named Fai. Why? Because Clamp, that's why.)
AU History: Yuui is born to a noble family of Enlightened, like many others claiming to be direct descendants of the Saviour. On his father's side, every Enlightened has been of the Psychic/Fairy type, and they have all married after type to produce new Psychic/Fairy children, who traditionally have all bonded with a Ralts as their first pokémon. They almost always have only one child per generation, at the most two, being fearful of "diluting" their noble blood, something that has led them to be viewed as snobbish and elitist – which, to be fair, is exactly what they are. It has also meant that the family has never managed to grow very big, and their father and his brother were indeed the last living descendants. Since their uncle can't father children due to an accident in his youth, the responsibility of passing on the family tradition was left to the younger brother.
But then, alack alay, Yuui and his twin brother Fai were born, one as a fairy/ghost and the other as a psychic/flying, breaking hundreds of years of breeding. Most of the blame was assigned to their mother, who while seemingly being a perfectly acceptable Fairy/Psychic, must've clearly had some impurity in her to produce such useless offspring - especially since she after that was unable to bear any more children.
Yuui and Fai have therefore not been very kindly treated by their father’s side of the family – which would include their grandparents, their great grandparents, and some more distant relatives, but most particularly their uncle. That side of the family has treated them as flawed goods, while their mother’s side of the family, being bigger but less influential, treated them like a huge embarrassment, since their birth had resulted in the public questioning of the legitimacy of their mother’s heritage. Their parents most likely try to be fair, but their father has grown up with all these expectations and demands from a young age, and their mother is constantly treated as a pariah by association – that’s the kind of thing that tends to affect you, and deeply too. And so parental disapproval was added to the mix.
Yuui, being the one of the two who could more easily handle and take the pressure and disapproval from their family, early took on the role of the "responsible one". Being of a more cautious and quiet nature he found that for him it was easier to, at least publicly, bend to the demands and duties of his family than to challenge them more outright the way Fai did. Of course doing so has created an even bigger contrast between the two brothers in the eyes of their family, making every side step Yuui makes seem even more jarring since it's more unexpected. This in turn has led to the family generally giving Yuui a bit more leeway and general approval while reacting more strongly on the occasions he deviated from the norm whereas Fai is looked upon with tired disapproval and the view that he can't do anything right.
This attitude has not completely stopped all of Yuui's acts of rebellion though it has led to him being generally more careful and subtle about it. The most noticeable, if initially completely unintentional, of these action was his bonding with a Roggenrola as his first pokémon rather than the psychic/fairy Ralts his family would have preferred. Roggenrola being neither psychic or fairy, or even ghost which at least would have matched Yuui's own type no matter how unsuitable it was to the family, was considered a very unsuitable choice for the young man. Demands were made that Yuui would release the rock pokémon and bond with a more suitable one of their choosing but, for once, no matter how much they argued Yuui stood his ground and refused to be separated from his new-found friend. In the end the family had to relent and the Roggenrola could stay, with the expressed instructions that the next pokémon Yuui bonded with was to be of a more suitable type. A more typical type of rebellion is the discreet tattoo he had made on the inside of his thigh after Fai had his made, which no one else in the family is ever likely to see.
As Fai's rebellion became more pronounced so did Yuui's efforts to be everything the family expected of him, hoping that if he could just be good enough it would give Fai the freedom he needed. Having been lucky enough to have had a compassionate and competent teacher who not only recognized his ability to connect with pokémon on a deeper level and but who was also able to convince Yuui's family to let that ability guide his continued schooling, he still has a number of private tutors making sure he will be able to take over the family responsibilities.
Juggling both his studies and joining Fai when he sneaks off to various exciting places as often as possible can be a bit stressful but he still enjoys the tiny bit of freedom it gives him, even though he would never even think of dreaming of more. But no matter how pressing the expectations of his family may be, or how trapped he believes to be by them, his bond and loyalty to his brother will always come first. So the moment Fai decides to leave Union Yuui will follow him without hesitation or question, because while his duty may be to his family his life will always be with Fai.
Canon Personality: Yuui’s demeanour is usually rather calm and soft and he is often seen with a small smile on his lips. He is very easy going and generally prefers to bend to other people’s will rather than trying to go against them. He doesn’t like to stand out much, preferring to take the side seat or work behind the scenes instead. Of course this doesn’t mean that he’s a pushover. If something really matters to him he tries to make sure he gets his way, but he will still do his best to not make too much of a fuss about it. There is one possible exception to this rule and that’s if it’s something that concerns his twin brother. But even then his experience tells him that making a big fuss usually only makes things worse for the person he’s trying to protect.
He makes for a very steady and loyal friend, sort of the calm rock that takes everything in stride. But if you’re going to be his friend there is one thing you must learn to live with for things to work out smoothly. No matter how close you are you will never be what matters most to him and if push comes to shove he will always put his brother before you, or anything else really. Including himself. For example he’s happily left his job and home in Italy in order to be with his brother in Japan.
He is very good at cooking and takes a great interest in it. At the moment he's a home economics teacher and before that he managed a restaurant in Italy. He's played the piano since he was a child and has also been doing archery but stopped when he got serious about cooking. Even so it's a skill he would like to take up again.
While he is the calmer of the twins that does not in any way mean that he is not up for a good prank, or several. The first thing he does when coming to Japan is not telling his brother but instead helping the chairwoman of the school, Yuuko, to play a prank on Fai and Kurogane. The twins also talk about how they would play pranks on the people around them when they were children by pretending to be the other one, and comments made by Fai indicate that they still do this sometimes. And while Yuui claims that he no longer can imitate his brother the way he once could it's very probably that he still can, he just don't want people to know about it. He’s a bit shy and not very comfortable with performing too much in public, leaving that to his more flamboyant brother.
It's rather difficult to rattle him and almost no matter what you throw at him he's probably just going to smile and roll with it. For example he doesn't seem to even raise an eyebrow at seeing his brother being chased by an angry, gigantic man. He also doesn't raise an eyebrow at the existence of the Mokonas, even though they're not exactly normal to his world and something that you see other characters react very strongly to. He has a very open mind and as long as something doesn't hurt people he's probably cool with it, and once again if it's his brother he will be fine with it no matter if it hurts others or not even though he disapproves of it.
In Tsubasa (Note: I'm going to keep referring to them by the names they use in Horitsuba to avoid confusion for you and headache for me.) Yuui is shown to be resigned, accepting their fate as not as much their fault as his for not having chosen to die when that was still an option. While Fai, having been put in the bottom of the tower, can still fight for their escape Yuui's position leaves him a lot more stuck and ultimately he can do nothing but watch, helpless as Fai tries to make his way towards him only to fall to the ground again and again. He only has one thing that's worth anything in his whole life and that is his brother, and as time passes Fai becomes his one and only focus. And then when Fai ultimately breaks, Yuui breaks as well, and in that loses what little will he had to live as Fai's safety and happiness becomes his one and only goal, his own life being nothing but an obstacle in the way of that purpose.
"I want to die. I want to die. I want to die. I want to die. I want to die. But before that I want someone to save Yuui. He needs to be saved."
By the time the opportunity of escape comes Yuui is shown to be grimly determined, and even though he wishes that he could have gone with Fai he doesn't even so much as flinch as he offers up his life so that his twin will be able to go free, and ultimately throws himself off the tower. His last thoughts remain on Fai with his wish that in spite of being left alone Fai will be able to live freely.
AU Deviation: As Yuui has neither lived in the seemingly perfect world of Horitsuba nor been subjected to the same horrors and trauma of Tsubasa his AU personality ends up somewhat in the middle where some things are concerned. While certainly not resigning himself to die - he would never want to leave Fai in such a way and more importantly there's no need - he's still resigning himself to a life trapped in his family's expectations so that his brother will be free. While Yuui has clear goals and wishes in both his canon's, this Yuui doesn't really know who he wants to be, or what he wants to do. He's never even really dared to think about it in other terms than what is expected of him.
While he's still friendly, and very patient and accepting, he doesn't have quite the same social skills that are shown in Horitsuba, mostly due to a lack of practice along with certain issues of self-esteem. While canon!Yuui doesn't seem to have any problems of that kind this Yuui has some difficulties with seeing his own worth, especially when removed from his duties. Just like his Tsubasa version the most important thing in his life is Fai and ultimately most of his actions can be traced back to him. In order to keep Fai safe and happy not only would Yuui be willing to sacrifice his own life and happiness he would also be willing to sacrifice the lives and happiness of others. Unlike his Tsubasa version their situation is far from as desperate and dire leading to him being able to learn that some sacrifices might in themselves also cause his brother pain and it will therefore take a very desperate situation for Yuui to turn to more extreme measures. And having lived a more happy and free life has also allowed him to have a life outside of his brother with his own interests and friends, even though he will drop everything if his brother needs him.
He still loves to cook, though here his focus is not just about making food for his brother and friends, but to different kinds of pokémon as well. This talent is not completely approved of by his family, as it takes time and energy away from more important things, and is therefore more of a guilty pleasure than anything else. He is also a teenager who has lived a rather privileged life, and even if you consider that he's had to grow up a bit quicker than he perhaps should have he's still not nearly as mature as his canon counterpart and can prove himself to be both a bit silly as well as a bit spoilt at times.
Canon Abilities: In Horitsuba he's about as magical as a piece of toast since he's living in a universe without magic. He does however have a set of more mundane abilities including cooking, teaching, playing the piano, (western) archery and singing.
In Tsubasa, while we don't get to see him use his powers we are still told that they would, if allowed to develop, would be on par with Fai's. While we can only speculate on the nature of his powers in relation to Fai's, the kind of power you wield in the Tsubasa universe seems strongly connected to the user's "essence". And since it's pointed out in Horitsuba that the twins are rather different it would make sense for Yuui's powers to reflect that, causing them to be less damage oriented and moresneaky subtle.
Both fairy and ghost typing include many indirect and strategic moves rather than outright offensive ones which fits this theory, with the added bonus of the ghost nicely reflecting how Yuui heavily affects the plot of Tsubasa while having died long before the storyline starts.
Enlightened Abilities: Yuui is a fairy/ghost enlightened and a child of the Verdant Forest.
At his first stage Yuui will mostly be able to use status changing moves and protective ones like moonlight, misty terrain and confuse ray while being very limited when it comes to actually causing damage. At this point all of his physical traits will reflect his fairy typing, making him sparkle faintly in direct light and giving his hair a faint pink cast to it.
After his first evolution he will be given access to more damaging moves like draining kiss, disarming voice and shadow sneak, and also more strategic moves like curse and destiny bond. Here his physical traits will hint more at his ghost typing as his eyes will acquire a red glow, which will be mostly noticeable in the dark, and the tendency to levitate a short distance above the ground. His fairy typing will cause his hair to turn full pink and grow down to his ankles. He won't be able to cut it. Thanks, typing.
His second evolution won't result in very many new moves, but the ones he gets will be rather powerful, such as moon blast and shadow force. He will be able to become intangible at will along with some minor physical changes.
Starter Pokémon: Roggenrola
Notes/Special Considerations: You might have noticed a similarity in the first part of the AU history section to Fai's history section. That's because, since Yuui and Fai are twins, me and Emi (Fai-mun) wrote that part of it together.
SAMPLES
First-Person: -No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
Do I sound horribly silly if I say that I would like to be less pink? My brother might find it cute but I'm not so sure it's quite my colour. [He fiddles with a lock of hair that does indeed have a pink sheen to it.] But that's not quite what you meant was it? You meant the non-type specific abilities, right?
[There's a slight pause as he thinks his answer over.]
I'm actually quite happy with the ability I already have, I like being able to communicate with my pokémon, well with pokémon in general actually, and it's comforting to be able to know what they're feeling, to know that they're happy with me. But if I had to pick something else I think I would choose… to be a shifter. Not quite sure what kind though, it would probably be horribly exciting to be able to shift into any kind of ghost type, though that could just be my vanity talking. [He laughs softly, and a bit self-deprecatingly, as he shrugs his shoulders.] Of course my family would probably have a fit if that happened so a fairy-type kind of shifter would probably be better. Besides it's not like the type matters that much to me, but to be able to change skin and just become something else for a while, to just… […Run free.] Anyway shifting has always sounded really exciting to me, and I would still be able to talk to my pokémon that way so… yeah, I think that's what I would choose.
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
I'm afraid of sounding cold but… that would probably depend on who the ally was and what they meant to me. I would never abandon a friend in need, or at least I hope I won't. I guess that is one of those things that you can never really be sure of until you've been tested on them, but I like to think that I wouldn't just abandon anyone in a situation like that.
That being said there are, and always will be, people who I would be willing do a lot for, possibly even things that aren't very nice, if it meant they would be safe. [If he was to be absolutely honest here he would probably say something on the lines of that there are some people, or just one really, who he would be willing to both die and kill - both humans and pokémon alike - for, if the danger was dire enough to call for it. But he has a feeling that wouldn't go down very well and it's not like he's telling an untruth. He's just… choosing his words very carefully, that's all.] Giving that you're calling them an ally I'm assuming that I care about this hypothetical person to some extent and if they were in trouble I think I would probably do whatever I could to help them, even if that meant some danger for myself. [His voice hardens somewhat.] But I will not foolishly risk my life for just anyone, or for most people really. Maybe that sounds selfish of me, but there are still people here who need me and who would be hurt if I risked my life like that, and unless they're the ones who're in need of help I won't do that to them.
-What would you say is your greatest duty
My greatest duty is to do my best to help our society flourish by bringing honour to my family. To work hard to become successful so that I will not embarrass or shame them and to try and… right the current taint to our bloodline. Because through our bloodline, as we are descendants of the Savior, we have both a duty and the ability to better this world for all who inhabit it. [His voice stays almost monotone as he speaks and the words sound well rehearsed rather than natural. His hands are clasped in front of him and his eyes are fixed on them. Whatever animation his body had before this particular question was asked is all gone now, replaced with a rigid back and tense muscles.]
Why?
[He looks up, bewildered.] Why? Because that is my duty, it always has been. I don't- I'm not- I don't know what else you're expecting me to say.
[There's a sentence stuck in his throat, an answer that wants to be let out.] My greatest duty is to protect and care for my brother, and to ensure that he will be safe and happy. Always. Because I love him, and he is important to me. [But he knows that while this is his truth, it's still not the answer he's supposed to give.]
-When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
Without any context just defeating it sound very unnecessary and, well, possibly like the kind of behaviour that got us into such trouble in the first place. I mean, I know there are situations where you need to fight but I don't think it should be your first option.
And while I do believe that research is certainly critical for our advancement, and I consider it very important, I still believe that in this situation the most important thing to do would be to bond with the pokémon. Bonding would help to build trust between it and us, which in turn would make future research of it both easier and, quite possibly, more effective. [He laughs a bit self-deprecatingly again.]] Of course I'm much better at bonding than I am at research, that's more my brother's area of expertise, so that could be clouding my judgement a bit.
Third-Person: It was getting late, the sky outside turning dark and with the librarian's pointed looks Yuui didn't need to consult his watch in order to realize that the library would be closing soon. That meant he'd stayed out too long again, and while his parents might not mind since he was spending his time studying he knew that his brother did, even if he tried not to show it too much. Sighing quietly Yuui rose from his seat and stretched, groaning slightly as his back released a series of satisfying pops and cracks, before gathering up the books he wasn't going to bring home and returning them to their shelves. He could have left them for the librarian but after having stayed here so close to closing time he didn't want to bother them any further.
On his way back he heard a soft scraping sound, one that, now that he heard it properly, he was pretty sure he had heard before only he'd been too engrossed in his books at the time to pay it much attention. Looking around he tried to find the source of the sound but finding nothing he shrugged his shoulders and made his way back to his desk to pack up the rest of his things. Bringing the books needed to take home with him to the check out desk he paid the sound little more attention until he'd managed to get a full block from the library and realized that could still hear it. He turned around but no matter how hard he looked he still couldn't make out what, or who, was causing it. Trying not to be too nervous, the city was safe after all, he stayed put and called out to where he had been coming from.
"Anyone there?"
There was no reply, but the scraping sound was getting closer so he continued to stay where he was, his eyes widening in surprise when, a few moments later, a Roggenrola made its way round the corner. It stopped when it realized it had been spotted, moving from foot to foot as if too anxious to approach him fully. Relieved to see that there was nothing to worry about Yuui crouched down on one knee and reached out a hand to the rock-pokémon, smiling gently as he reached out his mind towards it.
"Hello there, little one. Are you lost? Is that why you decided to follow me?" Listening carefully to the Roggenrola's thoughts and emotions, Yuui slowly managed to urge it forward. "Oh. You're not lost, you're lonely. You know this isn't necessarily the best way to make friends but…" His family probably wouldn't be very happy if he brought this one with him, but it didn't feel right to just leave it out on the street like this. Besides, it was kind of cute, and he could already feel a bond beginning to form between the two of them. And with that he made his decision; his family could be as angry with him as they wanted to, he was bringing this one home. His brother would stand by him at least, he knew that. "Why don't you come home with me? I could use a friend as well."

And since it's pointed out in Horitsuba that the twins are rather different it would make sense for Yuui's powers to reflect that, causing them to be less damage oriented and more
Both fairy and ghost typing include many indirect and strategic moves rather than outright offensive ones which fits this theory, with the added bonus of the ghost nicely reflecting how Yuui heavily affects the plot of Tsubasa while having died long before the storyline starts.
