CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Yuui Floutire
CANON: Shiritsu Horitsuba Gakuen
CANON REFERENCE: Here!
AGE: 23 (His canon age is unspecified but I'd guess this is a bit younger.)
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: Home Economics and Power Control Teacher / X-man
APPEARANCE:
When not teaching his cooking classes he dresses more casually in a style that can best be described as laid-back hipster. Also his hair is a bit longer.
Unless he allows Fai to dress him, which happens on semi-regular but unpredictable basis because the shock of it keeps the students on their toes, where you can expect him to wear pretty much anything. Most likely colorful.
He also has a developing physical mutation where the his sclerae are turning the same colour as his irises. It waxes and wanes depending on how much he's using his powers but is slowly moving towards permanence.
PERSONALITY: Yuui’s demeanour is usually rather calm and soft and he is often seen with a small smile on his lips. He is very easy going and generally prefers to bend to other people’s will rather than trying to go against them. He doesn’t like to stand out much, preferring to take the side seat or work behind the scenes instead. Of course this doesn’t mean that he’s a pushover. If something really matters to him he tries to make sure he gets his way, but he will still do his best to not make too much of a fuss about it. There is one possible exception to this rule and that’s if it’s something that concerns his twin brother. But even then his experience tells him that making a big fuss usually only makes things worse for the person he’s trying to protect.
He makes for a very steady and loyal friend, sort of the calm rock that takes everything in stride. But if you’re going to be his friend there is one thing you must learn to live with for things to work out smoothly. No matter how close you are you will never be what matters most to him and if push comes to shove he will always put his brother before you, or anything else really. Including himself. As seen in canon where he happily left his job and home in Italy in order to be with his brother in Japan.
He is very good at cooking and takes a great interest in it. At the moment he's a home economics teacher and before that he managed a restaurant in Italy. He's played the piano since he was a child, practiced in a choir, and has also been doing archery but stopped when he got serious about cooking. Even so it's a skill he would like to take up again. So he has always been a bit of an overachiever.
While he is the calmer of the twins that does not in any way mean that he is not up for a good prank, or several. The first thing he does when coming to Japan is not telling his brother but instead helping the chairwoman of the school, Yuuko, to play a prank on Fai and Fai's colleague Kurogane. The twins also talk about how they would play pranks on the people around them when they were children by pretending to be the other one, and comments made by Fai indicate that they still do this sometimes. And while Yuui claims that he no longer can imitate his brother the way he once could it's also hinted that he still can, he just don't want people to know about it. He’s a bit shy and not very comfortable with performing too much in public, leaving that to his more flamboyant brother.
It's rather difficult to rattle him and almost no matter what you throw at him he's probably just going to smile and roll with it. For example he doesn't seem to even raise an eyebrow at seeing his brother being chased by an angry, gigantic man. He also doesn't raise an eyebrow at the existence of the Mokonas, even though they're not exactly normal to his world and something that you see other characters react very strongly to. He has a very open mind and as long as something doesn't hurt people he's most likely fine with it, and once again if it's his brother there's the risk that he will be fine with it even though it's something he technically disapproves of.
In Institute he has, in a much more noticeable way, had to carry out the role of the “good twin”. It began as a way to protect his brother when they were still very young and then quickly grew out of hand as they became older, which is how he ended up in Italy practicing music in preparation for a career he didn't even want. This led him to developing a more pessimistic and resigned outlook, at least when it came to his own life and choices. Discovering his mutation and ending up at the Institute, where he could see Fai being more happy and confident with himself while putting the hopes of him as a musical genius on hold, as well as growing into an adult has enabled him to resolve many of his issues but that does not mean that they're completely gone and it's still something he needs to work on. Similarly being put in the position of team leader has made him more comfortable with being in focus and in charge, while helping him grow into his confidence.
Even so he still very much plays the good and/or calm twin to Fai's more outspoken behaviours, though these days he does it partly for his own convenience. Because that way no one is going to suspect that it was him who somehow mixed pink food colouring into the cafeteria's mashed potatoes. He also has a bit of a more outspoken sense of humour than is shown in his canon, and he definitely has developed a lot more sass.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Yuui has the ability of Sound Manipulation with an emotional manipulation and siren song orientation.
Using music, and to some extent the melody of his own voice during ordinary speech, Yuui can influence people's emotions. The easiest, and most simplistic, way of doing this is either to project the already existing feelings of a musical piece onto those around him or to put as much of a single feeling as possible into a specific musical sound and keep producing this sound as long as needed. Using his powers in this way doesn't usually take that much out of him but it also doesn't allow him that much control over exactly what he's projecting. He can never know if someone has a very differentiating association to the music he's selected and it can be very difficult to predict just how effective the selected piece will be. And while projecting a single emotion can be more potent it will also be a very pure form of the selected emotion and there is not way of knowing just how someone will react when they're suddenly blasted with an emotion like undiluted fear.
He's also able place his own emotions into his music, mostly using things he's composed himself with a specific mix of feelings in mind or by making something up on the spot if he doesn't have anything suitable at hand. While he doesn't need to feel these specific feelings while projecting them and he's able to amplify them if necessary they still need to be something he has some kind of experience of having felt at some point in his life. Using this method he's able to do more complex things like making people trust him and want to tell him things and increase the likelihood that someone's reaction to sudden fear is to run away rather than going berserk. While this allows him to layer the emotions more freely and have more control of the outcome it also takes a lot more out of him.
The purest for of his ability is the siren song, where he will captivate anyone who's affected by him, and it's also what takes the most out of him and tends to leave him physically and emotionally exhausted afterwards.
Since his powers are sound based he needs to be heard in order for them to work. He will have no effect whatsoever on someone who's deaf, or otherwise able to block out sounds. And while he is able to still use his powers long distance through the phone it takes a lot more out of hi m to do it and he will not be able to keep it up for long. The same going for using recordings of himself, they can still work but making them will take a long while and it will leave him very drained.
Taking on larger groups is possible but, again, takes a lot more out of him and if there's too many people present he will either overload and shut down or lose himself in his powers, depending on the situation. Overloading will probably just lead to him passing out but the cases where he loses himself can be a bit more problematic.
Since what he's projecting is emotions he has to take great care not to be caught up in them himself. Because if he does it's going to be almost impossible for him to get out of it without outside help. Which means that for more serious missions and situations where it's known that he's going to have to push his limits he's going to have to have someone with him to pull him back into himself once everything is done. This goes for the siren song as well where getting lost in his own powers means that he will just keep on singing until either someone snaps out of it or his throat has become so broken that it's physically impossible to produce any more sounds.
Additionally the aftermath of this kind of situation will leave his own emotions dulled for anywhere between a couple of hours to a day depending on the previous level of intensity, when there will also be a need to keep a rather close eye on him to make sure he doesn't accidentally does anything stupid. A duty that will most often fall on Fai.
The control he has over his powers and how far he's able to push himself is something that is going to keep developing the more he practices. With time he's also going to be more able to utilize the natural melody of his speech patterns when using his powers meaning that he will be able to influence people by just talking to them. And even without consciously using his powers his voice can be pretty captivating and something people like to listen to.
It's unclear if his affinity for music is connected to his mutation or if it would have been there anyway.
AU HISTORY:
Yuui grew up as the “calm” and “normal” child in a very busy family. With his father suffering from Parkinson's disease, which meant he could only work part time from home, and his mother having to spend a lot of time away because of her work as a judge he tried his hardest not to cause too much additional trouble. This has led to him partly raising himself while trying to act as a buffer between his more energetic twin brother and the rest of the family.
This followed him to school where had little trouble keeping up with his schoolwork with the difference that he was now getting into fights with his brother's bullies. It might not have been the best way of dealing with the problem but with Yuui's extreme protectiveness regarding his twin he couldn't have stopped it if he wanted to. Another concern that became more evident as Yuui entered school was that he really didn't seem to make any friends. Sure, he was on friendly terms with most of his classmates but it never seemed to go further than that and the only person he was ever seen with outside of class seemed to be his brother.
In the end it was decided that the best solution for this was to send him away from Fai's disruptive influence to a high-end musical school in Florence, Italy when Yuui was fourteen. Yuui's talent for music had been obvious from a very young age but while he loved it he was at the time far from sure it was something he wanted to centre his life around and it was one of few subjects where he bothered to argue against his parent's wishes.
Even though he would never admit to it, living with his grandmother in Italy was pretty good for him. He missed his brother like crazy, in spite of frequent communications through emails and skype, but being without him forced him to properly join the rest of the world and he began making proper friends. It was also in Italy he discovered his love and passion for cooking, something his grandmother encouraged as long as he didn't let it get too much in the way of his other studies. On the other hand going to music school, while enabling him to advance in his craft with leaps and bounds, was slowly draining him of his joy of music whilst also putting him in a spotlight position he was far from comfortable with.
It's quite possible that his mutation manifested very early, if not in his affinity for music then in the way his music could sometimes soothe his father's pains and aches, but at the time it wasn't noticed as such and so the proper revelation didn't happen until he was seventeen. He'd been selected to play a chosen piece in front of a small but influential audience and not feeling comfortable with that kind of pressure he poured himself into the music during a practice class. Unfortunately the piece he had chosen was a “näckpolska”, or reel of the Näck. The mythos and story behind this particular piece is that once it's begun to play those who hear it will be compelled to dance, more often than not to their deaths, and if a mortal happen to be foolish enough to try and play it they, too, will be unable to stop. The result being that he managed to make his professors and the students present dace, unable to stop his playing no matter how hard he tried until another teacher, checking in, saw the situation and acting quickly enough managed to forcefully pry him away from the piano.
This first real encounter with his mutation did not exactly endear it to him and on top of that finding out that his twin was also a mutant that that his entire family had been hiding this fact from him for two years made his feelings about the whole thing rather strained. On the other hand this also meant that he would be allowed to be in the same school as Fai which all in all outweighed everything else. Ever.
Even though being with his brother again unfortunately set Yuui back a bit in terms of personal development, and Yuui's issues with his mutation led him to ignore everything to do with it until doing so made him completely lose control at the school's halloween party, the Institute ended up to being a rather good place for him. With the expectations of him having a wonderful musical career, at least temporarily, put on hold he was able to focus more on his true passion, cooking, and once he sorted out his powers issues he was also able to enjoy his music again in a way he hadn't been able to for years. And, more importantly, seeing his brother grow into his own happy and independent person did a lot to help Yuui beginning to do the same. So in spite injuries, accidental poisonings, and kidnappings he was pretty happy during his time there.
Then the phoenix incident happened. Like several other students Yuui stayed at the Institute to finish his education after which he moved on to culinary school. With the climate towards mutants being what it was there was no way he could have made a proper career for himself with his music and having also decided to join the X-men it would just be a Bad Idea. Or at least that made for a very good excuse to those who'd still had hopes for Yuui the musical genius. Keeping up with his studies, which for him included quite a bit of travelling all over the world to properly learn other countries cuisine, along with X-men shenanigans and trying to have some kind of social life has made his past five years rather hectic but considering he was finally doing what he wanted he didn't really feel like complaining.
While he hadn't really considered being a teacher before it still seemed like a rather natural choice when the Institute was preparing to reopen shortly after he was done with culinary school. And since he'd had his own share of problems with controlling his own powers, and knew what it's like to not be completely comfortable with them, with the added benefit of being pretty damn good at calming people down the idea of teaching powers control was born and he spent the time between culinary school ending and the Institute opening making sure he was prepared for the role.

[Look who's gone from not wanting to learn about his mutant powers at all to helping others with how to control theirs!

Hello everyone, I hope you've all settled in nicely. I just wanted to introduce myself before everything gets too crazy around here. My name is Yuui Flourite and I will be teaching home economics along with power control, so I will probably be seeing most of you at some point or another. As some of you may already know we're going to have two teachers by the name of Flourite here at school, so if you could just go ahead and call me Yuui instead that would make things a whole less confusing. Besides, being referred to by my last name like that makes me feel so old.
Besides from teaching I will also be working here as an X-man, so I suppose you're free to refer to me by my code name as well. [His smile grows a little bit wider.] Provided you manage to figure it out, of course.
I'm also going to be involved with both the cooking and music club, so if you have any questions about either of the things I've just mentioned, or just want to see me for some other reason, just drop by my office and we'll talk. My door, and windows, are always open.
LOG SAMPLE:
If someone had told him, back when he was still a student at the Institute, that about five years from then he would be teaching at the same school together with his brother he would most likely have laughed his pretty little behind off. And yet, here they were. Though to be fair it still sometimes made him want to laugh. After all, the Institute had always had rather interesting teachers.
It was a bit intimidating, being counted as one of them now, and while he'd been spending the last months making sure he was ready for this he still felt like he had when he was fourteen and was suddenly beginning school in a completely different country. Wasn't growing up and not being a student anymore supposed to get rid of those pesky first day butterflies? Apparently not. Maybe they'd be gone once he got out of school for good, though somehow he doubted he would ever be able to get rid of this place. At least not for long.
He sat down on the window sill, dangling his legs outside and watching as the students arrive and began to explore the school. The students. His students. The thought alone was enough to drive the fluttering butterflies in his stomach into overdrive. Porca Madonna and he was expected to be an authority figure to these kids. Well, he supposed it would be alright with the younger kids, sort of, but how did that even work when he was only a few years older than some of them? Then again he'd turned out pretty alright even with the teachers he'd had so he supposed he wouldn't be able to mess them up too much. And wasn't that a relief?
But enough with his dramatics. If he kept on going like that he was going to end up completely ruining the mood. He was going to do fine, he wouldn't have gotten the position if the old man didn't believe he could actually do it, and there were plenty of people for him to go to if he began to falter. And from what he had seen so far the kids seemed to be an amusing and lively enough bunch who would probably be at least as much trouble as he, Fai and their friends had been so at least he wasn't very likely to get bored.
Either way this year was sure to turn out interesting and, nerves or not, he would't want to miss a minute of it.
